Senator George Mitchell endorses Caribou Music project

CARIBOU—Former Senator from Maine, George J. Mitchell endorsed the Caribou High School Music Building Fund (CHSMBF), a student-initiated non-profit organization based in Caribou, Maine, that seeks to build a $2.7 million regional music facility at caribou High School. The endorsement follows similar support from the Bowdoin College Department of Music, Former Governor Angus King, and U.S. Senator Susan Collins.

Mitchell served as Senator from 1980 to 1995, where he was elected Senate Majority Leader. In 1995, Mitchell became the Chairman of the International Commission on Disarmament in Northern Ireland, which led to the Belfast Agreement in 1998. Mitchell also serves as the Chancellor of Queen's University, Belfast.

In his letter to the public offering his support for the Caribou High School Music Building Fund, Mitchell wrote, "If my experience in Northern Ireland has taught me anything, it is that financial and commercial support for education promotes not only peace, but also prosperity. Investment in future generations produces unquantifiable dividends." Mitchell continued, "We cannot let this opportunity go without a wholehearted and complete commitment of individual, commercial, and organizational financial support. Funding institutions need to commit to the project in the same manner as the former students, producing tangible, collective benefits for all parties involved."

Regarding Mitchell's endorsement, Brandon Bouchard, chair of the Caribou High School Music Building Fund stated, "The CHS Music Building Fund is honored to have Senator Mitchell's endorsement for the project. His support identifies not only the importance of this proposed facility, but also of music education in all of our schools."
