Daponte String Quartet to hold concert for music fund

CARIBOU—The DaPonte String Quartet (DSQ) will perform a concert on September 24, 2005 at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, to help raise funds for the Caribou High School Music Building Fund. The concert will be held in Gates Auditorium at 7:30 PM and tickets are $20.

DSQ is an internationally renown string quartet based in Midcoast Maine. The Dapontes came to Maine in 1995 on a grant from the Natioanl Endowment for the Arts and Chember Music America. Three years later and at teh end of teh rant period, the musicians and their families decided to remain in Maine and build their careers from the Midcoast. The DaPontes live in Maine and tour and perform nationally. The group recently made their Carnegie Hall debut.

In February 2005, the DSQ's manager, Suzanne Trazoff, received an email about the Caribou high School Music Building Fund detailing the progress that the student-initiated group has made since it officially formed during the summer of 2004. The Caribou High School Music Building Fund is a student-initiated , 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was created to promote music education throughout Maine, and whose mission is to provide students with the resources necessary to obtain a beneficial music education by building a new regional music facility at Caribou High School in Caribou, Maine. According to Trazoff, one of the top priorities for the DSQ is to become apart of the cultural fabric of Maine by helping projects that befit music in the state. The CAribou High School Music Building Fund was a perfect fit.

The concert will take place in Bar Harbor, Maine, on September 24, 2005 in gates Auditorium at the College of the Atlantic. Tickets are $20 and the concert starts at 7:30 PM. The program will consist of a unique piece commissioned by the DSQ from Maine composer, Gia Comolli, called "String Play". Also on the program will be String Quartet No. 1 by Erwin Schulhoff, a composer who died in the concentration camps. Finally, there will be a Mozart-KV 464. Members of the DSQ will hive a pre-concert talk at 6:45 PM.
